SCAFFOLD™: Design for Thinking in the Age of AI

AI is rapidly changing what students can produce, but it has not changed what students need to learn. If anything, it has made that question more urgent.

At Mpower, our work is always grounded in a simple belief: great teaching begins with how learning is designed.

That belief is rooted in well-established principles from cognitive science, including student-centered learning (SCL), universal design for learning (UDL), metacognitive practice, and constructionist approaches. These approaches emphasize active thinking, reflection, collaboration, hands-on, minds-on learning, and ownership – conditions under which students don’t just complete work, but learn deeply and gain self-efficacy.

In an age where AI can generate answers instantly, those conditions matter more than ever.

Why Student-Centered Learning Matters Now

For decades, schools have balanced two priorities: covering content and developing thinking. Today, that balance has shifted.

When information is always available and AI can produce polished outputs in seconds, the value of education can no longer rest primarily on what students know. It must increasingly rest on how they think: how they question, evaluate, connect, and apply their learning. This is where student-centered learning becomes essential.

When done well, SCL:

  • Places students in active roles as thinkers and problem-solvers
  • Builds agency through goal-setting, reflection, and ownership
  • Encourages collaboration, discussion, and real-world application

These are not new ideas, but they are newly urgent. And yet, designing this kind of learning consistently is challenging. It requires time, structure, and a deep understanding of instructional practice. That is the gap we set out to address.

Why We Built SCAFFOLD™

SCAFFOLD was built to support teachers in designing learning that reflects these principles, consistently, practically, and in ways that work in real classrooms.

It is powered by AI, and designed expressly for teachers, to help them create more human-centered, discussion-rich, and cognitively engaging classroom experiences.

At its core, SCAFFOLD helps educators:

  1. Enhance existing lessons
Transform traditional activities into more student-centered experiences by incorporating discussion, collaboration, reflection, and active thinking.
  2. Design new learning experiences
Generate lessons across grade levels, subject areas, and contexts, aligned to your specific learning goals or standards, and grounded in strong pedagogy.
  3. Deepen instructional practice
Get practical guidance on applying student-centered strategies to your lessons and real classroom challenges.

The result is learning that is more intentional, more engaging, and more effective.

AI in Service of Human Learning

There is a growing narrative that AI will fundamentally change how students learn by taking on more of the work itself. We take a different view:

The role of AI in education is not to do the thinking for students. It is to help teachers create the conditions where thinking happens.

SCAFFOLD reflects that belief.

While it uses AI behind the scenes, what it produces are not student-facing outputs or digital learning experiences. Instead, it supports teachers in designing classrooms where students:

  • Engage in meaningful discussion
  • Collaborate with peers
  • Reflect on their learning
  • Apply ideas in real and relevant contexts

These are inherently human experiences, and they remain at the heart of powerful learning.

Accessible by Design

We believe that tools which support better teaching should be readily accessible to the people doing the work. Improving what’s possible in classrooms should not depend on individual teachers paying out of pocket.

That’s why SCAFFOLD is available free to educators.

What This Represents

SCAFFOLD is more than a tool.

It is a reflection of what we believe is possible when AI is used with intention – grounded in pedagogy, aligned to how students learn, and focused on strengthening, not replacing, the work of teachers.

We built SCAFFOLD not to make learning easier to bypass, but rather to make learning more meaningful to experience.
